Its like when Seth Godin talks about leading a tribe. What you have to do as a leader is lean in when the group needs help. But stay out of there way when they don't. I built a web app for myself called <a href="http://markadee.com" rel="nofollow">markadee</a> which lets you set a goal to a calendar and then when you make any progress you mark your calendar with an X and friends can leave comments to motivate you and you can do the same for others. I think of having a granular list of things can be daunting and I think just getting something done everyday no matter how small is much better measurement or progress. Really like your post.
