Learning Foreign Languages, Some Dos And Don't

Learning foreign languages can open up your world to different experiences and ways of thinking. It can also be fun, provided you do not push yourself, trying to compete with your fellow language students too hard. Many people spend a lot of time and resources on books, online tutorials and classes, only to later find that they are getting nowhere when it comes to learning foreign languages.

This article discusses how you can make your learning experience fun and enjoyable, and actually get to learn the target language in the process.

* Do Not Be Self-Conscious

One of the reasons children learn their native language so easily is that they are not scared of being laughed at, if they make mistakes. Since you are a learner, no one expects you to get it right the first time itself. Remember most people appreciate foreigners who make an effort to speak to them in their own language.

* Learn Outside The Classroom

Never think that your job is finished once you are outside the classroom. In order to learn a foreign language, you have to keep interacting with others who speak that language, tune in to radio and T.V. shows in the target language, read foreign language newspapers – in short, you have to keep learning the target foreign language outside the classroom as well.

* Use Special Learning Techniques

Learning foreign languages requires not just enthusiasm, but also a practical approach. It may be hard for you to initially pickup the intricacies of grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary of the target language. In such a case you may need to use certain time tested techniques to get it right. Use mnemonics, or memory enhancement techniques, to learn new words and phrases. If the target language has words similar to your native language, then the job becomes easier.

You could also associate particular words with mental images, since recalling images are easier than remembering words.

Memorizing words and sentences is a key factor in learning foreign languages. While simply memorizing by rote is not advisable, you have to spend some time getting a list of simple vocabulary right. If you learn certain simple sentences, it becomes easier for you to understand other more complicated sentences a a later time.

There are no short cuts to hard work when it comes to learning foreign languages. You need to devote time apart from class hours to it. But whatever method you choose for learning foreign languages, you have to be in a relaxed mood, since nervousness or shyness can hamper the learning process.
