How To Delegate, The Modus Operandi Of Delegation
To be a good manager you have to know how to delegate tasks. Delegating work means to decrease the burden and workload of the manager. There are many managers who do not delegate, as they fear that others may commit mistakes. Sometimes the managers also feel threatened that another might do the job better than him. Committing mistakes initially is a part of any learning procedure. Give the employees an opportunity to prove themselves, as you cannot come to conclusions without putting their potentials into test. A clever manager who knows how to delegate will choose the work and not delegate the crucial tasks initially in order to avoid drastic results. You should always try to build confidence among the employees, which will assist them to grow and feel motivated.
How To Delegate? Learn Some Techniques
Delegation is not just a job but is a skill that requires the application of leadership qualities and some logical techniques. First, you have to select the right candidate for the job. You need to provide him with a detailed job description, expected results, available resources. You need to clear all his queries.
Now if you are sure that he has understood the whole concept you can place your strategy before him. You can ask for suggestions from the delegate. If you get an unsatisfactory answer then provide him with more guidance and information. If the delegate comes out with a reasonable answer then you may ask him to follow his course of action for a while. He will return to you if he requires more guidance. You have to let your subordinates raise doubts and ask questions, as this is how they progress. Moreover, if the candidate gives a satisfactory answer then there is no need to stop him. You can allow him to proceed with the task.
What To Delegate?
As much as knowing how to delegate it is equally important to know what to delegate. If you can answer the following questions then you can conclude as to what work is to be delegated.
A. Can anyone else do the job instead of you?
B. Can someone else do the job better than you?
C. Can they do the task without your supervision?
D. Can they do the job at a lower cost than you?
E. Will the job provide an opportunity to the employees to grow?
If you are able to arrive at a positive answer to these questions then you can go ahead to delegate your task. However, you have to remember that you should not delegate tasks if they are
* Personal
* Routine
* Confidential or
* If the employee cannot learn anything from the task.
Delegation should always be for the all-round development of everyone associated with the company. It should never be for the benefit of a particular class of people. Involving your team members as much as possible will build trust and confidence. A successful supervisor should therefore know how to delegate efficiently. He should appreciate, and compliment the worker for his efforts.
