Eliminate Bad Habits

Follow these tips and start turning yourself into the person you want to be

True success is a combination of building good habits and eliminating bad habits. Who among us doesn’t have a few of those habits we’d love to lose in order to improve ourselves? Sometimes it’s easier said than done to make it happen, though. They don’t call them habits for nothing! However, with diligence you can find a way to move past some of the habits that have held you back in the past.

1. Recognize It

The first step of getting rid of a bad habit is to recognize that it exists. This takes self examination and self awareness on your part, to certainly acknowledge your strengths but also to notice when there are things that could stand improving. Then, make a commitment to making those things go away. Do remember to acknowledge the good, though. After all, you certainly have good points to be proud of if you have the awareness and desire to rid yourself of bad habits!

2. Replace It

I’m not (necessarily) talking about nicotine gum here, but it can be helpful to find a positive replacement for a negative habit. After all, eliminating any habit (good or bad) will leave you with some extra time on your hands. That old saying about idle hands being the devil’s workshop is based in fact. When you’re trying to get rid of a bad habit, it is definitely beneficial to keep yourself busy.

3. Monitor It

Inspect what you expect in your life. The self awareness that helped you to understand that you had a bad habit should be utilized to help you to keep track of your progress in getting rid of it. How else will you know when/if you have been successful in eliminating the bad habit?

4. Don’t Sweat It

When you have a slip, that is. It would be a great world, indeed, if we could recognize a bad habit, decide to get rid of it and never have to think about it again. Life is a process, and when you’re trying to improve yourself you will often experience the “two steps up and one step back” phenomenon. And this is really okay. You are human and you are in progress of doing some good work on yourself. Understand and accept that it will be an up and down kind of journey.

The underlying theme to all of this is the commitment it takes to improve yourself. It takes that commitment to decide to try to make things better, and certainly to look deep in yourself to identify the habits you’d like to move away from in your life. It takes a strong commitment to change and improvement to go through the exercise of working to replace bad habits with good. It will not be the easiest thing you ever attempted in your life, but there are great rewards that come with this commitment. By caring enough about yourself to try to make things better, by working hard enough to improve yourself you’ll be growing stronger and more confident. This ongoing development makes it easier and more rewarding to eliminate those bad habits and emerge a more effective person.
