Dressing For Success
Job interviews can be very stressful, and you need to look your best.
Remember that an interview is a sales pitch, where the product is you, and if you don’t look your best, you will find yourself overlooked.
First impressions mean everything and the job interview might be the only chance you get to make an impression, so make it a good one.
Coming into an interview with a stained shirt, purple hair and a tongue ring might work if you are trying to get a job in a tattoo shop but not at a law firm on Wall Street. Alter your appearance to fit what the employer expects. Do a little research prior to the interview to see what the accepted dress code is.
Do you really want to be judged by your appearance? Probably not, but in the case of a job interview, judging your appearance can be a quick way for the interviewer to see if you are really serious about the job and if you care about the way you present yourself.
It is always important to dress conservatively for an interview, while trying to avoid overdressing as well.
Here are some quick tips for looking your best at a job interview:
1. Wear clean and polished, conservative dress shoes
2. Sport a well-groomed hairstyle
3. Make sure your fingernails are cleaned and trimmed
4. Use minimal cologne or perfumes
5. No visible body piercing, except maybe ear piercings for women
6. Always have well-brushed teeth and fresh breath
7. Avoid having gum, candy, or other objects in your mouth
8. Wear minimal jewelry
9. No body odor please
Also, do yourself a favor and check your attire in the rest room just before your interview for a final check of your appearance, to make sure your tie is straight, to see that there is nothing in your teeth and that your hair is combed.
And remember, looking good can never make up for poor manners and boorish behavior, so just act relaxed, confident and show the interviewer that you are the right person for the job.
