Business delegation is essential for top-level executives. The list of work that a senior executive has to do increases day by day. This not only increases the stress of the person but also affects the growth of the business. In such a case, the only solution is business delegation.

What Should Be Delegated?

An important aspect to consider for business delegation is cost management. You can part with some of your work when another can do the same efficiently at a lower cost. Often executives avoid delegating some of those responsibilities that they feel are critical and cannot be done by anybody else other than them. However, holding the critical jobs only unto you, and not letting others train in those fields will only stifle the growth of the business. You might lose out on many important deals also, just because you are away and none of the rest in your team was able to handle the situation. First, you have to understand your position in your company. Identify your role that is contributing the highest value and try to focus on that part. Leave the rest to others and hold them accountable. This will not only reduce your stress but also allow the other employees to develop.

Essential Components Of A Successful Business Delegation

A. Selection of a suitable person: You have to be very cautious while selecting an appropriate person for a job position. Besides being qualified for the post, he should be able to tap the right resources. Train him adequately and allow him to attend seminars to gather pace.

B. Communicating conditions of the task: Be frank and precise in communicating all the aspects of the task to your delegate. You should give him a complete idea of the outcome, time-frame and the budgetary resources.

C. Working out a strategy: The task assigned to an employee may be a complex or a simple one however; he has to execute it compulsorily according to a well-prepared plan. It should always include the methodology, available resources and time-limit to complete the project. Never ignore the importance of evaluating the progress of work and making mid-course corrections.

D. Setting a time limit: Time frame is one of the most important issues and it should be set clearly before proceeding with the task. You can ask your delegate to plan a strategy and set the time limit and you on your part can provide him guidance in his work. This will keep the employee motivated and he will take more interest in accomplishing the work successfully.

E. Monitoring the progress: It is the last but the most important component of delegation. Never leave the job to a person and expect him to come with the results at the time of deadline. Actually, you are delegating your work. Hence, you should take interest in monitoring the work progress at all intervals in order to help your delegate work efficiently.

Even though business delegation is advised for all higher executives, there are some exceptions when they should not delegate their responsibilities. You cannot delegate your work that needs your specific technical knowledge or in instances where you have to retain your long-standing relationship with your customers. In these cases, you need to retain your leadership position. Never delegate work that is personal and confidential. After all, a business delegation is meant to solve the problems of the senior level executives and not to add upon it.
