Is The Pursuit Of Money Making Us Unhappy

Why is money important to us, and is it worth obsessing over?

There’s a growing sentiment out there that the pursuit of money is making the general population pretty miserable. I believe it’s probably true that life goals centered on nothing but money are not conducive to happiness, but money itself is not the problem. While it certainly seems like more people are unhappy about money than ever before, and ever rising fuel costs make it even worse, I don’t think that it’s a fair assessment. Although it is widely thought that the bible calls money the root of all evil, the actual verse says that it is the love of money is the root of all evil. It’s a small difference in words, but the meaning behind those words is huge.

It’s a fact of life that income is necessary for most of us. Things like food, shelter and clothing all come with price tags. Therefore, much of the population has to work (or support a working partner) in order to have the things that money can buy. This is actually okay. It’s even okay to like the things that money can buy and to want them. What isn’t okay is to idolize money and make the pursuit of money your sole purpose in life. This does not lead to a meaningful, fulfilling existence. Therein lies the problem.

4 Work Ethics To Live By

As you start this new year, perhaps one of your goals or resolutions is to create a better work experience for yourself. This article will help you, by explaining four work ethics you should live by. Here they are:

1. If you fail to plan, then plan to fail. One of the worst mistakes many people make is failing to plan. In doing so, you actually plan to fail because without a plan, you won’t get very far. If you don’t already have a business plan, sit down and write out some of your goals and plans right now.

2. Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. Believe it or not, the Golden Rule is still very much applicable in today’s world. While many people choose not to live by it (some people don’t even know what the Golden Rule is anymore!), the Golden Rule can help you create long-lasting relationships as well as nurture others.

Determine What You're Worth

Have you ever felt taken advantage of? Of course you have…we all have at some point. What happened when you felt that way? Did you sulk and kick yourself for allowing yourself to be taken advantage of? Or did you learn something from that experience?

People allow themselves to be taken advantage of simply because they don’t know what they are worth. A poor sense of self-worth inevitably leads to you being taken advantage of because you don’t know how to say no.

YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE

The first step to determining what you’re worth is to decide that your time is valuable. Whether you work a full-time job, or you are a stay at home mom, your time is just as valuable as the next person’s.

Place a dollar value on your time. How much would you say you’re worth per hour? When you can place this kidn of value on yourself, it will not be quite so easy to try to take on the whole world by yourself.

YOUR THOUGHTS ARE POWERFUL
